How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A failing G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good thing is that they are very affordable and readily available, especially when you're looking at a Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good option.
